The Pathway: You Can't Guide People Without a Destination

Before you measure movement, you have to name where people are moving to. A pathway your team can draw on a napkin is worth more than a strategy deck no one remembers.

name the destination.

Most churches have a mission statement. Very few have a pathway — a named, ordered sequence of steps a real person takes from first visit to sending leader.

01

A pathway is not a program list.

Programs are what you offer. A pathway is what a person walks. If your ‘next step’ diagram is a menu of ministries, guests will bounce off it. Reduce it to four to six named stages — each one a verb, each one measurable, each one the on-ramp to the next.

Can every campus pastor draw your pathway from memory in under 60 seconds? If not, it isn't a pathway yet.

02

Every stage needs an entry action and an exit signal.

An entry action is the smallest visible step that says ‘I'm in this stage’ — attend a Starting Point class, RSVP to a serve day, join a group. An exit signal is the observable behavior that says ‘I'm ready for the next one.’ Without both, your data has nothing to locate.

For each stage of your pathway, what is the one action a person takes to enter, and the one signal that says they're ready to move on?

03

Name it, then defend it.

The hardest part isn't drafting the pathway. It's deleting the seven other ways your team already talks about growth. Give the pathway a name. Put it on every internal doc. Retire the competing frameworks. In 90 days your leaders will speak one vocabulary — and that alone changes your assimilation numbers.

What is the one internal framework you will retire this quarter so the pathway can win?

The move

Ship a v1 pathway your whole staff can name — this month. Perfect is the enemy of shared.

A named pathway is the substrate every other piece assumes. Without it, your data has nothing to locate, your messaging has nowhere to point, and your metrics have nothing to measure.
