The Growth Reframe: Why Attendance Is a Byproduct
Before the tools, before the dashboards, before the workshop — one honest reframe of what growth actually is. Read it once. It changes the meeting.

a short reframe.
You are not fighting a growth problem. You are fighting a measurement problem — and the scoreboard has been lying to you.
Attendance answers the wrong question.
Attendance tells you a person was in a room. It doesn't tell you they were changed there. Every ChMS in America was built to count seats and dollars, so that's the story elders hear on Monday morning. But no one becomes a disciple because a chair was occupied. If your only instrument measures presence, you'll optimize for presence — and wonder why the fruit lags.
Look at your last board packet. How many of the numbers describe movement in a person's life? How many describe traffic?
Engagement is the leading indicator you don't have yet.
Engagement is a series of small, visible commitments — showing up mid-week, serving once, joining a group, giving for the first time, inviting a friend. Each is a signal. Stack them and you get a curve. Watch the curve and you can predict discipleship the way a good coach predicts a season: not by hoping, but by reading the leading indicators before the scoreboard changes.
If you plotted every attendee on a curve from 'first-time guest' to 'sending leader,' who would move this quarter — and who would you have missed?
This is not a marketing problem. It's an operating system.
You can't buy your way out of a measurement gap. You can't preach your way out either. Church Member Engagement is an operating system: a shared definition of the pathway, a way to locate every person on it, a messaging discipline that gives each person the next step, and a scoreboard your elders can read. The rest of the library installs each of those pieces.
If you handed this scoreboard to your executive team tomorrow, would they know what to do with it — or would they ask for the attendance report again?
The move
Stop reporting on attendance as if it were discipleship. Start measuring the engagement curve — and let the scoreboard finally match the mission.
The rest of the Understand row walks the four pieces of the operating system: pathway, data, messaging, and metrics. Read in any order.
